Monday Morning Caddy

Just like last week, one of the BBs was so close to victory on Sunday that he could taste it, only to come up just short of the coveted winner’s circle. Long hitter J.B. Holmes lost in a playoff to Paul Casey on Sunday, barely missing out on his third PGA Tour victory. Usually the driver is J.B.’s biggest weapon, but Sunday the big stick let him down when he needed it the most. Standing on the tee of the first playoff hole, all he needed to do was get one in the fairway, which would have put all the pressure on Casey. Instead, J.B. hit a snapper into the water on the left, essentially ending any chance he had to win.

Even though Holmes didn’t get the victory, he shot a super solid 69 on a day when scores were a little higher than the previous three rounds. Just like O’hair last week, Holmes is surely disappointed to have not won, but he has to be pleased with his final round. Starting the day in 15th, he moved his way up the leader board quickly, and held the club house lead at eleven under par when he finished. Unfortunately, Paul Casey wanted a piece of that lead too, and played well enough to get it.

If you’re wondering why I’m not really talking about my picks for the week, it’s because there isn’t much to talk about. Saturday evening, I was sitting pretty with the Colt Knost pick, but boy was that about to change. Colt lives in Texas, and used that home course knowledge to his advantage for the first three rounds, sitting in a tie for numero uno heading into Sunday play.

Hopefully I am wrong, but it is possible that someone kidnapped Colt and replaced him with a weekend warrior (a golfer that only plays on the weekends, or 95% of people that play golf). To put it lightly, Sunday for Colt was somewhat of a train wreck. In the first three rounds he had a total of seven bogeys, which is one better than his final round total of eight. That’s right, it’s hard to win on the PGA Tour with eight bogeys in the final round. HOWEVA (Stephen A. Smith), this was Colt’s first time in contention, so as we always like to do after a disappointment like this, we’re going to take only the positives from this week so that next time he has the chance to win, he gets the job done.

As for my other two picks, Jeff Overton and Sean O’hair, it didn’t pan out quite like I expected. Sean O’hair was in the field as of Thursday morning, but mysteriously wasn’t in the field after that. Obviously, it would be hard for Sean to play well if he is not in the tournament. Overton on the other hand, did play Thursday, shooting a forgettable 74. After that though, I’m not sure what happened. He withdrew from the tournament and was not to be heard from again this week. Hopefully he is not injured and will back in true form sooner than later.

Just like playing golf, there are going to be some up and down weeks when I’m picking players to do well. Having one player not play at all, another withdraw after one round, and the last one shooting a final round 81, it’s clear that this was not my best effort. That’s not going to stop me from dominating next week, though.

It is now officially Masters week, so Houston’s tournament is behind us and it’s time to have fun with the best golf week of the year. Be sure to check in regularly, as I will be posting more frequently than usual in honor of this great week. Any early predictions from you on who will play well this week?
